Understanding Big Men’s Watches for the Well-Fed Gent

By  |

If you have a large wrist, you are going to need a large watch to match it. There is no way to get around that. You see, smaller watches (medium face watches) on a big man’s wrist are going to look akin to a lady’s watch, and you just don’t want that. We are going to take a little look at how you can go about choosing watches for big men.

Why a Big Man’s Watch?

If you’re a regular reader of Dapperfied.com, you’ll notice we have touched on this a little already. Fashion accessories, such as watches, are meant to complement the rest of your look. They are supposed to look absolutely fantastic, but not stand out overtly. A good watch is one that draws attention, but not too much of it. If you are on the larger side and do not go down the route of big men’s watches when dressing up then chances are, attention could be drawn to the tiny size of your watch. This can also sometimes have the follow on effect of taking away from the rest of your attire. Yep, all it takes is a small thing like this to stop you from looking your best.

It is very hard to actually define what a big men’s watch actually is because it’s so subjective. We all have different wrists sizes, so what may look good on you may not necessarily look great on somebody else. Generally speaking though, anything larger than 50mm could feasibly be defined as a big man’s watch. 55mm tends to be the more common watch face size for ‘larger men’.

What should you be looking for in a big man’s watch?

Well, the first thing you want to pay attention to is the actual size of the watch face. You want to know that it is going to look right on your wrist. This means that you do not want to pick something too small. You also do not wish for something too large. As mentioned before, the vast majority of larger men should be fine with something along the lines of 55mm. Most brands will offer 55mm watches.

One of your first thoughts will be the type of watch that you are purchasing. Are you going for something a touch flashy that you can wear during formal events? Are you going for a sportier watch that you can wear in casual situations? This is going to be important when it comes to the style of watch AND where you purchase the watch from. In an ideal world we would, obviously, have both styles of watch (which is by no means hard to acquire – all it will take is some smart shopping, you can find a great selection here). If you don’t envisage going to too many formal events, you’re on a budget and can only have one watch for the time being, you could probably opt for a slightly higher-class sport watch which looks great for the odd formal occasion but is still able to withstand the rigours of daily use.

Don’t forget to pay attention to the strap too. There are quite a few people who tend to prefer big men’s watches with a stainless steel strap. They feel a bit weightier and they are easy to clean. However, there are others out there who find them heavy. If you are in that group, opt for a good watch with a leather strap. They are known to be a wee bit more difficult to clean  than the stainless steel option and they do not take water well, but they still look great.

Your main aim will be to consider how the watch looks taking into account your own personal style preferences. Is it something that could complement the rest of your style? Many tend to prefer watches that have a neutral colour to them. They are much easier to work in with whichever outfit you wish to wear that day than an outlandishly coloured one. However, if you are a person known for wearing a ton of colour then, by all means, opt for a watch which boasts a lot of colour. Nobody is really going to complain as long as your look is AUTHENTIC and not posed!

You may want to think about additional features if they are important to you. For example; if you are a diver then you may wish to opt for a watch that allows you to dive deep with it. If you wish for extra functionality, then you may want to see if there is a calendar or date function built into it.

If you want to look good, consider leaving out digital only watch. The vast majority (although there are exceptions) of them just look childish. Go for analogue watches all the way. And for those of you that still have trouble telling the time on an analogue watch, you best learn to tell it…soon! 🙂

Finally, make sure you pay attention to the quality of the watch that you are purchasing. There are plenty of watches out there to choose from at a variety of different price points. As you can probably guess, however, some are better than others. It is absolutely vital that you always check reviews before taking the plunge and purchasing the watch. Also, do make sure that you take the time to check whether a site is known for selling fake goods or not. Remember, if the price of a watch is too good to be true, it generally is.

Big Men’s Watches: Wrapping it up.

When purchasing a fashion accessory like this, it is generally advised that you only opt for watches from big brand names. They tend to be better quality. In addition to this, if anything goes wrong with it, it is likely that the company will be more than willing to help. There are a ton of horror stories out there where people opt for ‘no name’ watches thinking they are getting a brilliant deal, only to find that they aren’t. Their watch breaks a year down the line and they have absolutely nobody there to help them out. Do not fall into that trap.

So, thinking about big men’s watches, what do you think your next big men’s watch will be?
