Men’s Urban Clothing: Let’s Dig in Shall We?

Urban clothing is one clothing style that isn’t so easy to define – primarily because this style of dress can drastically change from location to location. For example; men’s urban clothing in New York City can be completely different to urban clothing in Chicago, or even in Los Angeles.

Some say urban clothing was brought to the world’s attention by African American youth who chose this style of clothing to express their individuality. It is very popular in the hip hop scene, although it has now outgrown that to an extent and become more of a wider entity in itself. Whilst the history of urban clothing is interesting (you will be surprised at just how much it has changed over the years), we are really only going to talk about the way that urban clothing is seen in this day and age in this post.

A history lesson might just be juicy enough for a focus piece in a future post here? Let’s have  think about that. 🙂 For the meantime however, it’s time to get stuck into our topic of today – here are a few tips for selecting the right style of urban clothing for yourself.

Men’s Urban Clothing: Buying Tips!

• Look through fashion magazines for inspiration! In fact, look through music magazines too. As you can probably guess, hip hop clothing has grown up with the music scene.
• There are no rules when it comes to urban clothing. One of the best things about urban style is that it is all about ‘expressing’ yourself. You can wear whatever you want, in any combination that you want. Urban fashion is all about reflecting your individuality. It is not about conforming to norms. This is why the world of urban fashion is changing at such a rapid pace. In the past, brightly coloured tracksuits could be regarded as urban fashion, in this day and age, a pair of loose fitting jeans and a good t-shirt could also be seen as urban. As we touched on earlier, this is a style that is quite popular amongst the youth in society, and we know how much they like going against the grain!
• Purchase a good selection of neutral colours. As we just mentioned before, brightly coloured clothing was often at the centre of urban fashion in the past. Not so much now. Sure, you can still wear brightly coloured clothing, but moderation is key. A little can go a long way! We suggest you purchase a few good pairs of jeans (not too tight, you want some bagginess in them) and a good selection of t-shirts (this is where your colour can come from!). This will give you a good selection of clothing to mix and match. Good jeans go with anything, even brightly coloured t-shirts.
• When it comes to urban clothing, you don’t want to forget your accessories! Obviously, having huge gold chains hang off your neck are a thing of the past (unless you want to rock that look, of course), however, a good hat, snap backs generally, have never gone out of fashion. They can really complete the look.
