Men’s Fashion Blazers: 6 Things you need to know
If you’re one of the millions of men that consider themselves fashion novices, it’s important to do your research before heading to a mall to go shopping. Men’s style has changed a lot over the years, and today’s men are faced with a multitude of decisions. Like “which blazer to buy” for instance. If you’re in the market for a new fashion blazer, here are 6 things you should know.
Getting to know Men’s Fashion Blazers
1.) They’re not jackets and they certainly aren’t hoodies. Men’s fashion blazers are casual, but contemporary. They can work at the office, in an educational setting or even on the weekend. They’re so versatile and their function depends entirely on how you wear it.
2.) They come in a lot of different styles. Men’s fashion blazers might have vents on the sides, in the centre or not at all. Single vents are the most common, but double vents allow for better movement. It’s uncommon to find a blazer without a vent as these styles are the most restrictive. They also come in single or double-breasted styles. Double-breasted look more traditional, but single-breasted are more common. There are also varying numbers of buttons and endless colour possibilities.
3.) The sizing can be confusing. The first thing you’ll notice is that the sizing is a number-letter combo. Awesome. The first part – the number – is your chest size OR over-arm size, minus 7 inches, because, why not? You get to measure yourself both ways. If the numbers are about the same, you’ll use the chest measurement as the size. If the over-the-arm measurement is larger, you’ll use that number (minus 7) as your size. The second part of the size is the letter. This will tell you if the blazer is long, short or regular. It may say the whole word or it may just have the letters S, R or L.
4.) They come in a lot of different materials. If you’re not all that savvy of a dresser, you may need to learn new terms before you can successfully shop for a blazer. Learn what corduroy is and embrace it as this is the most versatile blazer style. Every man should have a corduroy blazer in their closet. Other fabric options include camel hair (not from actual camels in most cases), navy, grey and velvet.
5.) They don’t really work with ties. They do – but not really. There are certain style rules you need to adhere to when wearing a blazer. First of all, you’re not wearing a suit jacket, so skip the tie. If you want to wear a tie, just get the suit jacket out. After all, blazers are all about stretching rules and conforming without bending to the will of The Man.
6.) They aren’t meant as outerwear. Men’s fashion blazers are not designed to be outerwear. While they’re technically a jacket, the material used to make them is quite thin and thus should not be worn as outerwear. Like a suit jacket, a blazer should be cleaned by a dry cleaner and it should not be exposed to unkind elements for too long. If you’re heading out in the rain or in the cold, pair the blazer with a trench or wool jacket.
