Understanding Thin Men’s Watches: A Gent’s Guide.
Have you been looking for a new watch? Well, if this is the case for you–and if, especially, you’re of the sort who enjoys beautiful, amazing-looking watches–then you’ll want to consider getting a thin men’s watch for your next timepiece.
You can get a lot of usage out of a thin watch: not only is the style nice, from a fashion perspective, but they also generally work very well. Of course, most watches work well, it’s true; but why not put on a timepiece that not only works well, but which is stylish to boot?
Why do thin men’s watches look so good?
One reason they look so good is because they can be applied to many different situations. You can imagine why this is: the only requirement for a thin watch is that it’s thin (i.e., that it’s underneath a certain width), which has no bearing on, say, material, design, or pattern.
Thus, a thin men’s watch can be something that’s beautiful, subtle dark leather or pleather, or it can be a cool affair with a lot of links and neato patterns.
Another reason they look good is because, since most major retailers offer them, the styles have been perfected. Jewellery designers–and, of course, horologists–know what they’re doing; thin men’s watches are pretty much a staple of modern men’s watchmaking.
Just think of that classy leather watch strap you have, with its calm, well-designed analog face, or your wife’s slim watch that resembles a tennis bracelet. Yup, they’ve had a lot of time to perfect this art.
2 things to keep in mind when buying a thin men’s watch
1- What about the ethics?
Perhaps the most important thing to keep in mind when buying a thin men’s watch is where the watch is coming from. After all, you have to keep an eye out for not only the country of origin but also the company that’s making it. Is the company known for its human-friendly ways?
If the company is, say, something like TAG Heuer, then you know for a fact that everyone is probably fine on the paying-everyone-a-fair-salary front. But you might not be so safe with a brand you’ve never heard of. To account for this problem, thoroughly research the companies beforehand.
And plus, what about the watch’s carbon footprint? As for this important factor, you do, after all, want to save the environment. Thus, while a watch might be fair trade, it might not necessarily be good for the environment. So you should keep an eye out for this as well; it’s better to harm the planet as little as possible, after all.
Finally, you’ll want to keep an eye out for how much the watch costs. Also, if you’re looking for more expensive thin men’s watches, be wary of any pushy sales people. Do your research on the watch you are interest in, spend as much time as you want looking – then buy when you’re ready.
2- Let’s talk about style.
The other thing you need to keep in mind, when buying a new thin men’s watch, is how it will jive with the rest of your outfit, as well as your wardrobe more generally. Naturally, it depends on the specific make and model of watch, but it’s important to note that thin men’s watches tend to be more stylistic in function and in design.
As such, if you’re a more fashion-minded kind of person, they might be excellent for everyday use. If you’re not, stylistically, one might still look great on your wrist–but be wary of context. Your super-conservative boss might not appreciate that you’re wearing a funky, flashy pink strap with a magenta face, after all.
Consider getting a watch that can be suited to different occasions–or, maybe even better, you can just get a bunch of watches for a bunch of different occasions. If you do this, make sure you’ll actually wear them; otherwise, you’d just be wasting your money.
Thin men’s watches: 8 ways to wear them to different occasions
1- Wear one at the beach.
Of course, you might not think of it this way, but you can definitely wear a watch to the beach! The ones that come in pale colours are probably best, but any kind of thin watch is good for the beach, if you’re just lounging in the sand and not going too much in the water.
If you do prefer to spend more time in the water, then get a waterproof digital watch.
2- Wear one to a fancy occasion.
You would automatically think of a leather watch when it comes to this, but there are actually a lot of watches that can be worn for fancy occasions, whether they’re in more modern styles, more classic styles, or even postmodern styles.
3- Wear one when you’re out shopping.
For a casual day purchasing groceries or going on errands, a watch with a thin strap is a good choice, since they’re often casual, but they’re usually quite precise.
You can test the waters if you’ve got a new watch as well; how does it feel when you’re out wearing it? Does it look good? Is anyone complimenting you on it–or, on the contrary, giving you snide looks?
4- Wear one when you’re out on the town with your friends.
Your friends love and support you–so they’re no doubt a good sounding board for the new watch you’ve just purchased.
It looks goods in restaurants, nightclubs, and shops, true, but these are occasions are also a time when your friends can tell you what they think of your new timepiece.
5- Wear one to work.
Where’s the one place where you’re going to wear a watch every day? Work, of course. It’s the only time where you’ll pretty much constantly need access to a timepiece (other than your cell phone, that is). Prep for work by slipping on an amazing thin-strapped watch.
The watch can be cool and stylish and sleek, or it can be funky-fresh with a retro print–it all depends on your workplace. Or, hey, if you like classic things an old movies, one of those Mickey Mouse watches would be really cool, too!
6- Wear one to work out.
Thin watches are good to wear when you’re working out, since–as we’ve said before–they’re quite precise. Now, given how thin the band–and, often, by extension, the face and inner workings are–it makes sense that these watches are usually not mechanical, but rather that they run on quartz mechanisms.
Quartz-based watches don’t function via clockwork, so you won’t get any of that cool steampunk stuff you might imagine is lying inside your watch.
However, as a general rule, they tend to be more precise than their mechanical counterparts, so it’s no surprise that quartz watches very often have additional features (aka complications, if you want to use the proper terminology), like a stopwatch function, calculators, calendars, and even fitness add-ons like a heart-rate monitor or a pedometer function.
Thus, these are great watches to wear if you’re into the whole fitness thing.
7- Wear one to a nice restaurant.
Like we’ve said already, thin men’s watches look good during formal occasions like weddings–so it’s no doubt that they’ll look good at the new ritzy place which just opened up in the heart of the downtown area.
No one will look at you twice if you show up with your sweetheart and a snazzy timepiece–although they may, if the timepiece is snazzy enough! Your dining partners are also a good sounding board, too, so if you meet another like-minded watch lover, be sure to get their opinion!
Just remember – anyone else’s opinion is just that – an opinion. So although your watch can create a good talking point with people, at the end of the day it’s your watch; your choice. 🙂
8- Wear one for any occasion you can think of.
Finally, thin watches are great for every single occasion you can think of. Like we’ve said before, the width doesn’t determine the style at all, so different makes are excellent for different environments and contexts.
But that being said, of course, there are a few thin men’s watches which are a great choice for every kind of context you can think of–black or gray ones, with subtle yet unique bands, and simpler faces that tell the time very precisely.
Don’t be afraid to experiment!
Thin Watches: A Great Choice
Thin men’s watches aren’t for everyone–but they’re certainly a great choice for many of us. Before we go our separate ways, a word of advice: the batteries might be difficult to put in.
Moreover, you’ll want to watch out for your budget, as purchasing these watches can cost quite a bit of money depending on the brand you purchase.
Remember, you don’t have to spend a ton to get a quality watch – just make sure it fits your needs, is of a good enough quality that it lasts you and you’re good to go!
Okay, so, if you’re considering getting a new watch, it might be time to consider a thin watch. After all, they’re fashionable, cool, functional–and, it goes without saying, punctual–what’s not to love? 🙂
